The Rankin House was a stop on the underground railroad.  I have painted several paintings on this site in all seasons.  My favorite is this scene with snow.  When I was painting it, I often looked across into Kentucky and thought about the escaping slaves and the hardships they faced crossing the icy Ohio River. This image first appeared on the cover of ''Muzzleblast  Magazine's'' October 2001 issue. The location for this painting was on Simon Kenton's tract of land not far from his station and spring near Washington, Kentucky.  ''The Frontiersman'' written by Allan Eckert , is a great historical narrative about this area of Northeastern Kentucky.
