I was out turkey hunting and had just returned home when a friend stopped by with a big turkey he had just shot. The bird had an eleven inch beard. I thought of doing a painting of the two and wanted to recreated something that may have happened two hundred and fifty years ago. I took my period clothing, flintlock, and his turkey to a spot on Cabin Creek in Northeaetern Kentucky where the ''Warrior's Trail'' once crossed. The place was a short distance upstream from where the great Shawnee warrior, Chief Blue Jacket, had been captured after stealing horses at Strodes Station in the late 18th Century. I dressed my friend in my period frontier clothing and posed him with the turkey on his back near the center of the stream. I waded out in the stream in front of him with my camera and sketch pad. Previously, I had made a little thumbnail sketch on a scrap piece of paper and was getting it out of my pocket for comparison of his pose when I heard a turkey start gobbling behind him. My friend heard it also and froze. I snapped a photo and quickly drew another sketch for reference for when I returned to my studio. It's fun to recreate something that may have happened two hundred and fifty years ago. Steve White
