In 1929, when Col. J.B. Russell decided Maysville needed a third movie theatre, he chose the Lexington architectural firm of Frankel and Curtis to design the building. Owner and architect, either oblivious to, or completely aware of the street's varied styles [i.e. Roman Revival Court House, Masonic Temple with gargoyles and stained glass windows, Germanic brick homes, fanciful Romanesque house with seashell bedecked turret], opted for a Spanish Colonial Revival theme. This was a design one might expect in California or the Southwest but somewhat unique to Northern Kentucky.
An original poster for the movie ''The Stars are Singing''was brought to our gallery to be framed. I visualized a painting with it in the coming attractions box on the outside of the theater. I had my wife Susan model a female figure standing in the rain with an umbrella looking at the poster.
I think the first movie I saw there was ''Tarzan''. The theater had a usher that took me to my seat. Before the movie began it was dark and if I looked at the celing I could see stars shinning down. On both sides of the theater there were bust of Spanish men in a garden. During the movie some kids got loud so the usher walked down the ile with a flash light and made them quiet down. I usually got a big bag of poped corn with extra butter and a coke. Steve White
